Mujirushi Ryohin, MUJI in Japanese, translates as “no-brand quality goods.”
MUJI is a consumer goods store that focuses on simple, low cost, good quality products. They have over 7,000 items for your home, health, and apparel.
This company’s ‘about us’ page is about the only one you will find peace while you read it. It creates a sense of calm and also a bit of understanding and even happiness. I encourage you to take a quick moment and check it out here.
I am going to write about all the stationery items but their selection of clothing, home, and health products is HUGE!
Their pens and notebooks are great quality for the price and have tons of color options! I have only had the chance to shop in a store once and was overwhelmed with the choices.
The planner has side flaps built in to hold cards, notes, and also pen cases like the one below:
The fountain pen I purchased on the MUJI site comes in a Fine nib size, which puts down a much wider line weight than I expected for a Japanese pen. These are typically much smaller for other nibs in the Fine size like Pilot fountain pens.
I tested a number of pens and a pencil and liked what I saw with each one. They have very thin lines and the erasable pens rubbed off much better than I expected.
The A5 slim notebook has some vertical dotted lines and helped to organize my writing. I like how soft these lines are so they disappear if you are writing over them.
Where to Find MUJI
They have stores in the following US cities:
NYC - 59th Street
NYC - Time Square
NYC - 5th Ave.
NYC - Hudson Yards
NYC - Chelsea
NYC - SoHo
NYC - Williamsburg
NYC - Cooper Square
NYC - JFK Airport
New Jersey - Garden State
Boston - Newbury Street
California - Santa Monica
California - San Francisco
California San Jose
California - Los Angeles
California - Santa Monica
California - Santa Anita
Oregon - Portland
If you are unlucky enough to live outside these cities, it is very difficult to directly buy MUJI products. For this post, I am going to focus on finding the stationery products but a lot of the same places can be used to find the clothing, household goods, and health products.
Online Store
The obvious first choice is their online store. The trick here is that it is really hard to navigate the store on your phone. They have not optimized the store for phones and not all the store items show up as being available.
Be sure to add one of the snack items to get a unique treat. I tried the Monk Fruit candy and it came in handy writing this article late at night :)
Ebay
This is the second best option online. Folks on ebay have figured out that we all want MUJI and sell a decent selection with a small markup. You can find them HERE.
Amazon
I am surprised no one has set up an Amazon drop ship store yet. The selection on Amazon is quite limited, although they do have the basics HERE. They are all marked up considerably from the online store but beware of the ‘Muji-Style’ copy cats.
Ali Express
Don’t go here. These are all “Muji-style” products. A very kind way to openly state that these are all knockoffs.
Friends and Family
This is something I have considered and want to bug my NYC friends to FaceTime from the store like a virtual shopper. If anyone out there wants to do this please send me a message! I will be happy to foot the bill for both of us…to an extent! :)
Let me know if you know if you know of anywhere else we can get our hands on these pens!
