Are Artist’s Loft Notebooks better than Leuchtturm?

The notebook brand Artist’s Loft that is commonly found in Michael’s art stores is making a move into the market of hardcover notebooks. While they have had lots of different styles on sale before now, they decided to increase the number of A5 size hardcover notebooks which are made to look VERY similar to the Leuchtturm1917 notebooks. I want to share with you the similarities and the differences in case you are thinking about either of these notebooks.

Leuchtturm1917 Notebooks listed at $19.95.

Leuchtturm1917 Notebooks listed at $19.95.

How they are quite similar:

  1. Color Choices - The Artist’s Loft notebooks come in a rainbow of colors which is what caught my eye. The display looked a lot like how Leuchtturm displays their notebooks.

  2. Page Layouts - Each Artist’s Loft notebook comes in dot-grid, square-grid, lined, and blank.

  3. Size - The A5 size which is roughly 6in wide by 8'in tall has become quite popular..

How they are different:

  1. Price - There is a $10 difference in price and after you take into account that Michael’s always has a sale on these books, the price difference can be as much as $15 cheaper for the Artist’s Loft notebooks.

  2. Page Numbers - Leuchtturm1917 notebooks are 249 pages and are numbered in the notebooks. The Artist’s Loft notebooks come with 192 pages or oddly the exact same as Leuchtturm…249…but do not include page numbers.

  3. White Paper vs Off White - Artist’s Loft notebooks are a bright white while Leuchtturm has always uses an off white shade. This is excluding the Leuchtturm sketchbooks.

  4. Storage Pocket - No storage pocket for the Artist’s Loft notebooks, and no archival storage sticker set either.

IN SUMMARY

While these two notebooks may appear to be similar, compared side by side in person, the Leuchtturm1917 A5 size notebooks are far superior in design, paper quality, and craftsmanship. While the Artist’s Loft paper is 100gsm, it is poorly made, and ink feathers and spreads when using gel and fountain pen ink. While the Artist’s Loft notebooks are good for their price, they simply do not compare to the Leuchtturm notebooks they are trying to be.
